New Year’s Resolutions

30 October 2019

We’ve all made New Year’s resolutions, and sometimes they’ve stuck and sometimes they haven’t.

In this episode, Rachel takes inspiration from Atomic Habits by James Clear and talks about how to have a real impact on our children’s spiritual lives by dreaming big but going slow. She reminds us that change doesn’t have to be dramatic or instant; small, consistent steps are what shape spiritual growth over time.

Rachel also reflects on the New Year as a unique parenting opportunity. Each new season of family life brings fresh challenges, new friendships, different questions and shifting experiences. She encourages us to get ahead of those moments: the first way children hear something often becomes their default understanding, so the start of a new year can be a great time to gently frame what might be coming their way. Whether it’s helping them navigate friendships, guiding them through changing emotions, or beginning faith conversations before they ask, we can be intentional now in setting up truth and confidence for the year ahead.

Rather than waiting for children to stumble into difficulties, Rachel invites us to pause and ask: What might my child face this year, and how can I prepare them? That might look like everyday chats at bedtime, conversations on the school run, or just naming something early so it feels familiar when it arrives.

Sometimes the most life-giving resolutions aren’t sweeping lifestyle changes, but simple consistent rhythms—slow, steady, proactive parenting that lays foundations now for the year ahead.
